In 2006, Pat McQuaid became the President of the Cycliste International (UCI), also known as the International Cycling Union. Situated in Aigle, Switzerland, the UCI is the association of National Cycling Federations, overseeing the disciplines of road, track, cyclo-cross, mountain bike, BMX, trial, indoor cycling (artistic cycling and cycle-ball) and paracycling at an international level.
The UCI is also responsible for the organisation of world championships, collaborating with the International Olympic Committee, promoting sporting ethics and fair play as well as the general promotion of cycling at all levels.
In the time that Pat McQuaid has been head of the UCI, the organisation has taken great strides to tackle doping within the sport, instituting amongst other measures the UCI anti-doping charter.
A former international cyclist himself, Pat McQuaid won the Tour of Ireland in 1975 and 1976 and represented Ireland during the seventies, before becoming the Irish national team director between 1983 and 1986. He has been the Race Director on the Tour of Langkawi in Malaysia, the Tour of China and the Tour of the Phillipines, as well as serving as the President of the Irish Cycling Federation.
McQuaid holds a degree in Physical Education, a subject which he taught in between 1973-1985.
