Conference examines social and economic impact of mega events

10 August 2006

International academics and experts on the social and economic impact of mega events will convene in Denmark in September to discuss facts and myths surrounding the effects of major sports events. The Danish government is currently discussing whether to bid for the Olympic Games in 2020 and the conference hopes to inform that debate.

The conference is organised by the CopenhagenBusinessSchool and takes place on 1 September.

Speakers from Spain, Sweden, Germany, US, Italy and Copenhagen will look at experiences from preparing, hosting and bidding for the Olympic Games with examples from London 2012, the Stockholm 2004 bid and the 1992 Barcelona Games.

The conference will also provide participants with an overview of existing research on several aspects of economic and social effects of hosting a mega sport event such as

  • cost cutting measures with regards to facility operations and infrastructures
  • social, integrative and other effects
  • city, company and country branding
  • environmental and ethical effects

Learn more about the conference and costs of participation from the website of the CopenhagenBusinessSchool.
