Since Søren Ørgaard left teaching in 2006 to take up a position as playmaker with Aalborg Municipality, he has worked with community organisations and non-formal education.

At the time, the position of playmaker was a brand new invention designed to create projects promoting movement and exercise at the intersection between schools and community organisations.

In 2013, he became a sports consultant in Aalborg Municipality and thus entered the administrative and political engine room of non-formal education. His tasks as a sports consultant ranged from booking facilities to major facility construction projects.

During the same period, Søren was, for a number of years, chair of 'Fritidssamrådet', a national council for municipal employees in non-formal education.

During his time as a sports consultant, he also became the team leader for Aalborg Municipality's employees within non-formal education, and in 2020, he moved on to a position as head of culture, leisure, and rural affairs in Jammerbugt Municipality.

In 2023, Søren returned to Aalborg Municipality as head of Aalborg Sports Park. Here, he was responsible for operating and developing the municipal sports facilities. The sports park consists of 10 different sites, with GIGANTIUM and Aalborg Stadium as the largest and an organisation with 400 employees.

In March 2025, he became the director of the Danish Institute for Sports Studies, the Danish Institute for Non-Formal Education, and Play the Game.

Søren Ørgaard originally trained as a teacher and expanded this training with a diploma in sports pedagogy. He later studied for a master's degree in sports and welfare at the University of Copenhagen and most recently completed a diploma programme in management at Komponent, a development centre for Danish municipalities.
