ASOIF releases governance review results

An evaluation of the governance status of 28 international summer sports federations was released today at the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) General Assembly taking place during the SportAccord Convention in Aarhus, Denmark.

A press release on the report concludes that while there is “general good practice” in the federations, there is “significant room for improvement”. The content of the report has been compiled through a questionnaire answered by the federations themselves and moderated by sport consultancy firm ITrustSport.

Among the positive findings of the review, ASOIF highlights that all 28 federations publish their full constitutions, all federations have rules regarding election processes and 18 publish audited accounts, while 15 have term limits.

When it comes to the publishing of remuneration and ‘financial benefits’, open tenders and procurement contracts as well as the auditing of development funds, the performance of the international federations leaves room for improvement.

The report does not reveal the scores or performance of the individual federation and says that the results are not easily comparable due to the big differences in size and scale among the federations.

“The first review presented today is just a starting point. Now that we have a better understanding of the issues and where they are, it will be easier to initiate progress where it is needed. This is something we will begin working on closely with our members as of tomorrow,” said ASOIF president Francesco Ricci Bitti at the general assembly in Aarhus.

Next in the ASOIF governance reviewing process are individual meetings with the federations and a workshop, which will be followed up by a revised questionnaire and assessment process at the end of 2017.
