European Lotteries pass resolution on integrity in sport
At their General Assembly last month, the umbrella organisation for national lotteries and gaming companies in Europe, European Lotteries (EL) passed a Resolution on Public order and Integrity of Sport with concrete initiatives that aim at protecting sporting competitions from illegal betting and match fixing.
With the resolution EL joins the choir of official bodies calling for action against corruption and match fixing in sport. Recent weeks have seen among others the Council of Europe and the European Parliament launching declarations on how to combat these threats to sport. The EL resolution outlines actions to be taken by all member organisations and include- expanding the existing monitoring system to include the global betting market- the establishment of an international sport integrity agency- promoting legislation against money laundering through sportAccording to EL’s resolution illegal betting is a global problem and as such needs global solutions, which is why EL has joined forces with sister organisation World Lottery Association (WLA) in order to expand the EL monitoring system. The most important goal from the resolution is the global aspect and in order to reach this goal EL has also engaged in partnerships with other international organisations such as SportAccord and AIPS with whom EL is working on initiatives on education and media awareness respectively. In a statement on the resolution, Friedrich Stickler, President of EL says: “We have been the prime partners of sport for decades, providing sustainable funding of more than two billion EUR to European sport each year. And we are more than ever committed to help defending the values of sport wherever we can, including by financial contributions.”
