Freiburg University organizes high-profile symposium on doping in Europe
The University of Freiburg takes the subject of doping in general and in history under careful consideration during a 3-day doping symposium in September.
On June 6, 2007, the Former Rector Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Jäger appointed the „Unabhängige Gutachterkommission zur Evaluierung der Abteilung Rehabilitative und Präventive Sportmedizin des Universitätsklinikums Freiburg“ („Evaluierungskommission Freiburger Sporertmedizin“).
In doing so, the University thoroughly wanted to investigate the allegations of possible systematic doping practices of sports medicine physicians in Freiburg, in particular for cyclists of the Team Telekom/Team T-Mobile. The allegations were confirmed shortly thereafter.
Now four and a half years after the detection of organized fraud in the Freiburg based cycling Team Telekom / T-Mobile, the Evaluierungskommission will host the international symposium “Sports Medicine and Doping in Europe” on September 12-14, 2011. During this three-day event, leading experts in the field will present their research on international and local doping affairs in the context of sports policy and medicine and from scientific, historical, political, legal, and sociological perspectives.
The Sports Medicine and Doping Symposium is free and open to the public, but advance registration is requested.
Prominent speakers are:
Dr. Richard Pound: Founding President of World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), Former Vice-President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), IOC Member and IOC Representative on the WADA Foundation Board.Prof. Dr. Arne Ljungqvist: WADA Vice-President, IOC Member, President of the IOC Medical Commission, Chair of the WADA Health, Medical & Research Committee.Patrick McQuaid: President of the Union Cycliste Internationale, IOC Member, Member of the Executive Committee and of the Foundation Board of WADA.
