Leadership insights on governance in sport
A new series of leadership insights into governance on sport aims to assist sport leaders in spotting, sharing and shaping evolving good practices.
The leadership insights are written by Michael Pedersen, Founder of M INC., who is an internationally recognized expert and leader in good governance, transparency, ethics and integrity. The first issue in the series focuses on the business case for good governance in sport and the case of the Scottish Football Association on how to enable modernisation of governance standards. The business case shows that modernisation of governance standards will better enable sports leaders to develop their sports as good governance can be seen to build:
- Trust by enabling strong relationships with key stakeholders of the game
- Growth by enabling increased revenues
- Performance by attracting and retaining people fit for the game, motivated and supported to perform to their full ability
The Scottish Football Association recently went through a radical governance overhaul, and this case reveals some noteworthy tactics for enabling modernisation of governance.
- The association depoliticised the highly sensitive challenge of modernising its governance standards by subjecting itself to an independent review
- It gave a voice to members and other key stakeholders of the game in a transparent change process
- The association eventually focused the change process on devising and implementing a new strategic plan under the leadership of its new chief executive
- The association is now also advocating governance change in relevant international sport governing bodies
