Prince Ali of Jordan to stand for FIFA presidency

Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein of Jordan has announced that he intends to stand against Sepp Blatter as FIFA president at the elections this May.

Few weeks before the deadline for announcing candidatures for the post as president of the world governing body of football, current FIFA vice president and executive committee member Ali Bin Al Hussein has today announced his candidature.

“I am seeking the presidency of FIFA because I believe it is time to shift the focus away from administrative controversy and back to sport,” said the Jordanian in a press release on his website weareasia.com.

“This was not an easy decision. It came after careful consideration and many discussions with respected FIFA colleagues over the last few months. The message I heard, over and over, was that it is time for a change. The world’s game deserves a world-class governing body — an International Federation that is a service organisation and a model of ethics, transparency and good governance.”

Al Hussein will be up against incumbent president Sepp Blatter who is running for his fifth term and former FIFA secretary general Jérôme Champagne.

The deadline for the submission of candidatures is 29 January 2015.
