Do your own sports governance benchmarking

Play the Game has launched two online tools that allow anyone to benchmark an international sports federation or national sports organisation following the principles of our governance observer tools.

On this theme page you will find information about and links to the two tools

  • The Sport Governance Observer tool (SGO tool)
  • The National Sports Governance Observer tool (NSGO tool)

The Sports Governance Observer (SGO) tool

The SGO tool is a very comprehensive tool that scores the performance of individual sports federations on 309 indicators through a yes or no system.

The indicators are divided into four different dimensions:

  • transparency
  • democracy
  • internal accountability and control
  • societal responsibility

For ease of use, the online tool makes it possible to fill in the answers for each dimension individually.

The SGO tool makes it possible to benchmark an international sports federation of your choice. It also allows you to compare your results to findings from the previous 11 international sports federations that have already been benchmarked by Play the Game’s experts during the SGO project.

The SGO tool was developed in 2018 following years of research and cooperation between Play the Game and various European universities. It is authored by Dr. Arnout Geeraert, KU Leuven, and managed by Play the Game.

The National Sports Governance Observer (NSGO) tool

The NSGO tool scores the performance of individual sports organisations on 274 indicators of good governance through simple yes and no answers.

The 274 indicators are divided into four different dimensions:

  • transparency
  • democratic processes
  • internal accountability and control
  • societal responsibility

For ease of use, the online tool makes it possible to fill in the answers for each dimension individually.

The NSGO tool makes it possible to benchmark the governance of a national sports organisation of your choice. It also allows you to compare your results to findings from the previous benchmarking processes of national sports organisations.

At its launch in November 2021, the database holds data from 189 sports federations from 24 countries.

All these results are produced through extensive research by experts and have been reviewed by Play the Game. The plan is to expand the database with new and verified data from official NSGO partners as the project progresses in the future.

The NSGO tool was developed in 2017 following years of research and cooperation between Play the Game and various European universities. This version of the NSGO tool is authored by Dr. Arnout Geeraert, KU Leuven, and it is managed by Play the Game.
